Competition between existing and new payment methods opens up new alternatives for customers. Banks are trying to counteract the growing importance of digital groups.
However, according to 58% of respondents, more than half of them use Paypal’s online payment service to make online purchases. Girocard, also known as EC card, ranks third. Forty-one percent of respondents said they use it frequently.
However, the frequency of use is not the only decisive factor in the economic and social importance of the form of payment. This is because it is also necessary to take into account the level of volume processed and the qualitative importance of the transaction.
The use of other payment services, such as Payback Pay (8%), Google Pay (4%) and Apple Pay (2%), is also becoming statistically perceptible, according to the data.
Consumers value different options depending on the payment method. Speed, awareness and security were mentioned as positive characteristics of money by respondents. Payment by Girocard or credit card is perceived by consumers as convenient and fast. However, only a quarter of respondents (26%) consider this method of payment to be safe, according to a survey conducted on behalf of a BearingPoint consulting firm.
German consumers are considered to be cash fans, but are increasingly using other payment methods. Although banknotes and coins are still the most popular means of payment – 80% use them frequently, according to surveys conducted by the sociological institute YouGov.
